History

New Dimension PhotoCraft started in 2004 with the unorthodox idea of creating 3D photographs in the Paper-Tole style. Initial attempts appeared promising, but the major hurdle to overcome was the question of how to cut photographic paper. Unlike the thin flexible prints used in traditonal papertole, photographic paper is heavyweight, stiff and reflective, all three properties making it undesirable for cutting by hand.

There was also no precedent for this idea, a benefit for originality but a hindrance for getting advice. The first few "drafts" were simply scissor-cut photos on plain paper to judge the overall feel of the completed item. It didn't help to visit papercraft exhibitions and have the professionals judge that the idea "can't be done". With enough time, any product can be made, however I was looking to develop a process where multiples of the same item could be made relatively quickly. Various failed attempts at making improvised cutting templates and tools delayed the idea, until experiments with a laser engraving machine eventually proved successful. This process however also took a number of years before a regular routine was established enabling a completed product to be made without making a draft copy. Computing skills in photo editing had to be improved and specific graphic programs had to be purchased.

Support

The development of this business, especially in it's early stages, could not have been done without the support of a number of other photographic businesses in various fields. As a result of this assistance, New Dimension PhotoCraft is committed to remain exclusively on the production of 3D photographs. The photographic industry is extremely competitive, and building a more traditional business based on prints and photoshoots would be particularly demanding. Having a product that is extremely unique not only creates a new niche in the market, but allows me to work with other photographers, instead of against them.

Donations, Cross-Promotions & Commissions

Creating these products is extremely satisfying, particularly due to the interest they generate from passers-by. It remains though that the most difficult aspect of creating a new product is making people aware of it's existance. New Dimension PhotoCraft is more than happy to work with other businesses and organisations for mutual benefit.

Due to the 3D nature of the product, it is expected that customers will wish to see examples in person before deciding on a purchase, regardless of what is contained on any advertising material. The strategy is to have many permanent display locations across the country. We are quite happy to create and donate new products to suitable parties, especially where the photographs used are of tourism and merchandising significance. Provided that contact details are publicised, this has the following benefits:

The addition of an entertaining & visually
appealing artwork to your public space;

The possibility of recieving a commission of
any copies sold, either directly or indirectly;

Cross promotion by our business sending
additional visitors & customers to your business.
